Dear Parents/Carers of S6 Pupils
RE: SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE
As you may be aware Aberdeenshire Council runs a campaign targeted at young drivers and their passengers called ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive’. You can see what this is about on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/AberdeenshireTP.
Over the next few months a number of our senior pupils will pass their driving test and research shows that they are most likely to be involved in a car accident when they are least experienced. Despite the advice of parents, police, teachers and others in our community, barely a week goes by without a newspaper report of fatalities and serious injuries to young drivers and their passengers in our corner of north-east Scotland.
I am writing to you to seek your support in reducing the risk of car accidents involving our senior pupils during the school day.
- Given our provision of free school transport senior pupils should not, routinely, drive a car or ride a motorbike to travel between home and school. The use of a car should be linked to a specific need. The school does not consider ‘a quicker journey’ to be good reason.
- If a senior pupil does drive to school the car must be parked until he/she drives home. ‘Nipping out’ at lunchtime should not be an option.
- Other passengers should not be taken.
These are strong recommendations and the school hopes you will reinforce this message at home. There is considerable freedom in being able to travel independently, particularly for young people who live in rural areas, but this freedom must be exercised in a way that is as safe as possible.
Thank you, in anticipation for your support in this matter
Yours sincerely
